Medical Technician

Draw blood from outpatients for requested laboratory tests. This includes using special drawing techniques and assuring that proper tubes are used, and the correct amount of blood is drawn and verifying the patient as the individual denoted on the request and labels all tubes with the required patient identifiers, per policy, date, and time, etc. Adhere to safety, infection control, and universal precautions at all times while drawing blood. This includes the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing gloves, and lab coats. Proficient in phlebotomy techniques; being able to draw all but the most difficult patients and follows proper procedures. In addition, the incumbent must develop the essential speed required to complete the blood drawing duties. Responsible for, but not limited to, performing the following special drawing procedures:
collecting timed specimens such as growth hormone, peak and trough drug levels, glucose and lactose tolerance specimens, instructing patients in procedures to follow prior, during and after tests, making out schedules for a patient to follow in order to obtain the correct blood specimens at the required time, and instructs patients in proper sterile midstream urine collection, 24 hour urine collection, and collection of specimens for culture and sensitivity, ova and parasites, 2hr pp and occult bloods. Know first aid procedures for the care of patients who become sick, arrest, or faint while having blood drawn. Observes and reports any physical or mental changes while patients are being drawn. The incumbent assists in emergency situations. Contact physicians/nursing staff for missing lab orders. Work Schedule:

Experience:
You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Medical Technician - and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings and/or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a phlebotomist. Specialized Experience may include:
Draws blood from patients for requested laboratory blood tests; Verify proper patient preparation, sample collections, and sample transport requirements for all laboratory blood tests; Receives, processes, and packs for shipment varied clinical blood specimens for reference laboratory testing; Accept and enters requests for blood tests into a computer system; Maintain the laboratory equipment and controls supplies. Successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the Medical Technician position which may include clinical hematology, clinical laboratory practices, phlebotomy practicum, clinical microbiology, clinical practicum, or special topics in the Medical Laboratory Technology field. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as listed above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Medical Technician position such as clinical hematology, clinical laboratory practices, phlebotomy practicum, clinical microbiology, clinical practicum, or special topics in the Medical Laboratory Technology field. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
